A Writer’s Guide

Editors look critically at the structure, story, and flow of your writing. They dive deep into the text to identify plot gaps and inconsistent themes, and fact-check for accuracy. A good editor will make sure your writing includes the most important information while also trimming text for clarity. A final review of your text corrects grammar, word choice, and punctuation to ensure your writing is ready for the reader.

It all depends on what services are required for your project. I will always discuss the details with you before starting any work, and I will provide a written estimate for everything we agree upon. There are many high-quality online programs and services available to proofread, spellcheck, and advise on editorial changes, but there is something to be said about a real person communicating with you about your writing. This allows you to have a conversation, discuss the writing, and work through issues in a way that one can only successfully achieve with another human being. If your desired audience is going to be real people, shouldn’t the first set of eyes reviewing your project come from the same?

Sometimes, by the time a manuscript gets to the editing stage, clients are feeling overwhelmed, at a loss, or even burned out. My goal is to help rejuvenate them – help them get excited about their project again, and also to help them realistically reach publication.

I promise my clients that I will be patient, honest, and professional. I'm always available to answer questions or provide guidance. Meetings can be via phone, video conferencing, or even in person for authors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Editors ensure your writing is delivered to the intended audience in the best way possible. They view your text objectively and with a fresh perspective; this ensures your message is delivered clearly and without error. As your editor, I will make sure your audience understands what you want to say – all while maintaining that your voice is the one coming through, loud and clear. Even the most famed and well-loved authors have editors and proofreaders working behind the scenes to ensure quality, accuracy, and readability.

I work on a variety of writing forms. I enjoy working with authors of fiction, creative nonfiction, memoirs, family recollections, blog posts, newsletters, and marketing materials.​ I provide limited support for academic and technical writing.

I will not edit plagiarized work or work that violates the law, copyright, or an academic honor code. I do not provide translation, web development, or graphic design. I do not provide publishing services, nor do I have access to any publishing house contacts. Many writers choose to self-publish. While I do not have contacts in the publishing world, I can provide limited assistance should you choose to self-publish your writing.

Proofreading is the last step in the writing process. It may be performed by an editor or by a third party. Proofreaders are on the lookout for spelling errors, punctuation mistakes, typos, and misused words. They’ll fix bad line breaks and formatting errors to ensure your text meets professional standards. Editors review the work holistically to guide the direction of the writer.
